The Tanyard is open to anyone aged between 10 years old up to 18 yrs old from the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock area. The Tanyard is a youth drop in centre where young people can meet in a safe and welcoming environment and if they choose to, can engage in positive activities such as Art, ICT and sports. The Tanyard is open to young people four days a week (see opening times above), and as well as recreational activities we also offer accreditation through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, confidential advice and counselling.
Background
The Tanyard Youth Project is a registered charity (1108844) with Company Limited by Guarantee status 5336853). It was founded by the Pembroke Tanyard Management Trust in 1997 in order to provide inclusive learning and leisure activities for young people aged 10-18 yrs.
The Tanyard Youth Project serves young people who live in Pembroke and Pembroke Dock as well as disparate rural village communities. Two of these are areas amongst the highest "areas of deprivation" in Great Britain (Monkton and Llanion).
The aim of this project is to provide a safe, caring, welcoming, user friendly environment to all young people regardless of their ability, disability, gender, race, creed, colour, sexual orientation, religion or social disposition.
The project offers an alternative to the possibilities of underachievement, offending, vandalism, substance misuse, alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour.

Facilities
At the Tanyard we are always open to new ideas, but here are just a few of our favourites!

The Main Hall The main hall is where we play table tennis, indoor football, badminton, play team games, dance, watch films, chill out, chat..... This is a great space that we have used for many different activities from presentations to Annual General Meetings and in June - even an Art exhibition! All around the banisters there are also examples of young peoples art work and an events board so that everyone knows whats coming up! |

The ART Room "My fave part of the Tanyard is the art room because you can make whatever you want to and at the moment we are making a massive shark COOOOOooooolllll!!!! We are making the shark to hang as people look around on our open day when the Pembroke Festival is on. I have made my family xmas card there too and sometimes it's a nice place to chill out and just draw. |

The Digilab - so called because our sponsors CREDU who have sponsored youth projects all over Wales where young people can access the internet for free and also do projects or homework for school or college. The Tanyard has an interactive whiteboard for teaching as a projector, and video editing equipment. Last year for example we did a five day dance project at the Tanyard and through having this equipment a young person (Ross aged 16) was able to learn how to edit the film and has since gone on to produce other films of kayaking and trips for the Project. Young people can print out for free - but we try to keep it to low level to save the trees! "I like to go in the computer room to go on myBebo, and also we have learnt to make cards and flyers for things like birthdays or car washes" |

The Coffee Bar This is where young people have to sign in every day, and where you can buy refreshments like hot and cold drinks, chocolate bars and crisps. Once or twice a week we also hold very popular cookery sessions where the young people help to choose the recipe, budget for ingredients and then cook the meal. All food is sold very cheaply to encourage a healthy diet and to learn new skills. The washing and clearing up is all part of the process, and we now have a NEW kitchen which has a bigger area to cook, a new oven, lowered areas for the disabled and even a washing machine! |

The CAVE The Tanyard is actually built in to the walls of the rock and so we have some cool features - not climbing walls but they are hard to paint! The Cave area is where we have our pool table (20p per game), 50" flatscreen T.V with Sky and also XBox and PS2 console for playing Singstar and computer games like Buzz. This is also where we watch the big football and ruby matches and one day hope to build two areas so that we can use one for drama and the other half for recreation. |
Accreditation
(a posh word for certificates)
At the Tanyard we believe that if you engage well with us on a project you should be rewarded, and be able to gain accreditation or recognized certificates for your hard work. There are two main certificates we can offer - and they are based on age and commitment levels (how much time you can put in to them given school and home life). If you want to know more, always feel free to ask staff.
Duke Of Edinburgh Award (14-19yrs old)
